The lodge is two and a half hours and one and a half hours by car from Arusha and Moshi respectively. Interesting land marks of attraction are especially the border concrete pillars demacating the alignment made in the 1800s to place mount Kilimanjaro on the Tanganyika (then) side.
It is located in a quiet and peaceful place next to the Cornel Ngaleku Children Centre (see www.ngaleku.org).
The lodge exists solely for the purpose of charity to support orphans and vulnerable children cared for at the Centre. All profits from the operation of the lodge will be used to provide the essential needs of the children.
If you have a soft spot for children your heart will be warmed by stepping next door to the Centre.
You are most welcome to spend time with the children when you are at the lodge.

Maktau Mountain Lodge organizes climbs up the mountain together with a specialized and officially registered local company.
Maktau Mountain Lodge takes care of everything, from transport to the entrance gate and back to our Lodge after finishing the climb, guides, porters and cooks, tents and food on the mountain.
Maktau Mountain Lodge is a perfect place to relax before and after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. The Rongai route on the northers side of the mountain is the closest to the Lodge. But if you want to climb a different route, we will organize it for you!

In order to not disturb the children in their daily routine we have 2 moments per day to visit the children:
- 9 am – 10.30 am
- 3 pm – 5 pm

Visit the projects of the CNCC
The CNCC has different projects which are helping to take care of the children at the Centre. We are more than willing to show you around. Please contact the manager and she will arrange it for you.
Walk around with a local guide and visit Kenya
Because we are near the border with Kenya it is easy to walk to Kenya and visit local villages on the way and get introduced with the daily local life.

Lake Chala
Lake Chala is only 45 minutes away by car. You can visit Lake Chala for a day and do a walking safari, go fishing or canoeing.

MAKTAU MOUNTAIN LODGE LOCATION
Route description to Maktau Mountain Lodge (from Moshi)
Follow the road to Holili. Before Holili turn left in the direction of Rombo / Tarakea.
You will pass Mkuu and other small villages like Olele and Mashati. At Usseri you leave the tarmac road and turn right at the church. A sign of Maktau Mountain Lodge is on your right.
At this lower road you keep going straight. From here it is approximately 8 KM to our lodge and you will find 2 other signboards to put you in the right direction.
Route description to Maktau Mountain Lodge (from Kenya)
From Tarakea Town you turn left after 1 KM. You will find a signboard on your left hand.
Follow the road for another 9 KM and keep left after a small bridge. After 4 KM turn left at the Maktau Mountain Lodge signboard and follow the road for 3 KM. Here you will find the final signboard where you turn right to our lodge.
